As a young rapscallion stranded on an Island, my time is split between writing, performing spoken word, wrestling alligators and delivering uplifting pep talks to hairdressers before they prune me. I meditate and wash daily when possible.

Interviews with Creative Minds – No.6: Donna Jones MBE

Artist, entrepreneur, poet, fashionista, charitable Tour de Force and dog lover –  Donna Jones MBE is widely recognised as an integral branch of the Isle of Wight’s creative revolution.

That’s all well and good, but facing a grilling from DxK is another matter; how did one of the Isle of Wight’s premier prose practitioners fare in conversation with the gloriously coiffured stud muffin? And, more importantly, did a sweet pooch named Scoot’s snoring scupper the tranquility of the occasion? Listen and find out!

To get in contact with Donna either follow her Twitter, message her on Facebook or send her an email.

*Special thanks to Jodie, Sam and Brad (aka Ba.Dow) for granting permission for Kureen to use the track ‘In The Name’ in the piece.

Featured Artist: Debbie Chessell

Earlier this year I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a host of captivating visual portraits when passing the Isle of Wight’s premier art shop: ‘Forget Me Not’. Astoundingly it turned out to be the work of a 17 year-old.

Debbie Chessell - June Artist 2Debbie Chessell is, it transpires, not only a fantastic painter, but also a talented photographer and designer. For those reasons I was ecstatic when she agreed to be the featured artist for June.

Subjects range from political figures such as Rosa Parks to musician Jack Johnson, the sultry Marilyn Monroe and even Isle of Wight based professional body piercer, Emma Melson.

So, enough waffle from me – take a look at the gallery below! All contact details for the artist are at the bottom of the page.

Take a look at Debbie’s website or Tumblr, where you can get in contact and gain further information.

Along the winding path, inside the hedgerows; playful field birds hop branches within. Alongside, enigmatic labyrinths of gnarly spaces in-between meander with red berries vibrating rich alchemy.

I dream to be here, and photographs become dreams as I rise up over hills, feet drenched in wet grass, side by side the curious farm animals peeping out from sleeping fields. Behind the lens lies the trance – a state of hyper reality; a sumptuous intricacy of nature’s woven carpet, rolling over and caressing distant places, frees me from GDNS_2013 (15 of 15)-2the constraints of the common reality. Here, nature pleads we take notice and find ourselves deeply within a blade of dewy grass, a distant hill, or alongside a winding paths besot with playful birds. This series of photographs were taken between September and December 2012 and represent a period of upheaval and huge changes in my life and circumstances. In essence, They recall the epigram by Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr, “Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose” meaning, ‘The more things seem to change, they more they stay the same.’ In these hills, and the surrounding countryside; I sense the universal truth forever remains the same.

This collection of monographic photographs will be exhibited at Dimbola Lodge, Freshwater on the Isle of Wight from 5th May until the 27th August 2014.
